“I hunted in Namibia at Khan River Ranch in the first week in September 2002. The trip was organized through Tangla Tours and Jason Rodd in the UK, and I was very pleased with the service. To put things in perspective I had contacted quite a number of agents and Jason was the only one who showed any interest. Accordingly, he got my business and will certainly be given an opportunity to handle any of my foreign trips in future. Jason booked the flights and arranged the hunting, thus allowing me a pretty hassle free time.
Georg Neef, the owner of Khan River and a Namibia PH met me at the airport and I was taken north for about two hours to the ranch. Georg has been on the ranch, full time for 15 years, but has spent all his childhood weekends and holidays there. 6 Years ago, he and his charming wife Martina, decided to concentrate on hunting and now the have 6000 hectares of land with abundant game. Even from the first moments of arriving on the ranch I was aware that this was no “desert”. Game was plentiful and Georg started coaching my untutored eye by pointing out Oryx, Blessbuck, Springbok, Steinbuck, Kudu, and Ostrich. His knowledge of the birds and animals made for a very interesting time.
We hunted every day, or every day that I wished as one morning I went into the craft market with Martina. Otherwise we were hunting for about 4 hours in the morning and much the same in the evening. On the first afternoon, I had shot a jackal, an Oryx and a gold medal Steinbuck which made for a great start, but things kept on being interesting all week. I eventually shot several jackal, several Oryx, the gold medal Steinbuck, a silver medal Springbok and a bronze medal Warthog. I shot a baboon on the last morning which was a good long range shot at a small target sitting on top of a tree.
I had good fun with the doves and the sand grouse and took the opportunity to have a few shots every day on his well prepared shooting range, which goes out to 300 yds. I never shot a Kudu, but we saw several which were shootable. It was just the question of getting into them and getting a shot at then through the thick bush. The big bulls became big bulls by being wary and clever. It was always exiting, trying and I have no real regrets about not getting one. That’s hunting! More to the point it gives me something to try next time - and there certainly will be a next time.
Georg Neef was an excellent professional and I would recommend him to anyone.
He was highly knowledgeable, friendly, patient and a great host. The accommodation
was perfect and the food was excellent. There was a well stocked bar for those
who wished to celebrate their successes. A further treat I enjoyed was that
Georg was doing some
game catching when I was there and I spent an interesting afternoon watching
the catchers building the boma, and then the next day watching the helicopter
working the collie dog, herding the game into the enclosure. A brief trip
in the helicopter crowned the experience.
All in all a fantastic trip! I recommend anyone to do the same and I am sur they will have a wonderful time. I am happy for anyone to phone me to talk about this. I had a super time...”
